An introduction to the principles and standards for thinking and communicating clearly and effectively. Intended to improve the student's ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate issues, ideas, and problems.  3 credits
A topical seminar which analyzes selected critical writings pertaining to a central idea or theme (e.g. "the concept of utopia"). The course provides practice in the application of the principles and instruments of criticism.  3 credits

The honors seminar is intended to provide advanced work for students and is designed to challenge them to explore intensively issues of their choice. The culmination is a research paper, performance, or an artistic work, usually in the student's major field.  3 cr
Total credit hours: 15
Upon completion of the UMA Associate Degree Honors requirements, a student may continue in the Bachelor's Degree Honors Program.  Completion of six additional hours of honors electives and HON 401 Leadership seminar or HON 410 Senior Honors Thesis are required.
