Eric Stark - Associate Professor of Architecture, Architecture Program Coordinator

estarkProfessor Stark came to UMA in 2005 having spent the previous 11 years in Boston, most recently working for the firm Perry Dean Rogers | Partners Architects. There he worked on various institutional projects including the McCain Library at Agnes Scott College, 60 Oxford Street for Harvard University, and an addition to the National Library of Medicine. During that time he also served as an adjunct professor at the Boston Architectural Center, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Professor Stark graduated magna cum laude from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa in 1989 with a BA in Theater Design and a minor in Shakespearian Literature. After working in theaters on both coasts, he received his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Design, graduating in 1998 with a Letter of Commendation for Outstanding Achievement.

In addition to teaching at UMA, Professor Stark maintains a small architectural practice in Portland doing residential and institutional work in Maine. His current work includes a new learning center for the University College Center in Saco. His on-going research includes community partnering, the use of diagram in architecture, and furniture design.

Robert Sherman, RA - Assistant Professor of Architecture

Robert ShermanProfessor Sherman earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Maine.  Following registration as an EIT in Maine and Connecticut, he went on to complete a 5-year professional Bachelor of Architecture degree through Syracuse University.  He became a licensed architect in New York following experience with King & King Architects, Sargent-Webster-Crenshaw & Folley Architects/Engineers, and special projects with McDonald & Korman Architects (SU Undergraduate & Graduate Deans of Architecture).  After many years of practice in New York and Connecticut, Rob went on to earn the Master of Architecture II degree through Syracuse University at Florence, Italy in 2003.

Rob is a member of the Maine American Institute of Architects, a Registered NYS Architect, a board member of the UMA President’s Council for Environmental Sustainability, a UMA representative to The Green Campus Consortium of Maine Colleges, a Trustee for The Olmsted Alliance for Parks and Landscapes, a member of the Maine US Green Building Council and Maine Indoor Air Quality Council, and a member of the Portland Society of Architects.  Having moved to Hallowell (previously of Orr’s Island), Rob is starting a small architectural practice. Following his architecture class project to expand the Harlow Gallery and add artist apartments in Hallowell, he is presently working on an addition to a residence located on Great Island, Rhode Island.

As advisor for the American Institute of Architecture Students and the Art and Architecture Society of UMA, Rob is curator for yearly juried Architecture Program exhibits at UMA and presently at the University of Southern Maine.  As a faculty advisor to the UMA Honors Program, Rob recently led a seminar on Sustainable Architecture at Acadia National Park for the National Collegiate Honors Council week-long "Partners in the Parks" program with students attending from as far away as Vietnam and Azerbaijan. This was a great opportunity to join Honors Program staff, students, faculty, and US Forest Rangers for interdisciplinary seminars, hiking, swimming, canoeing, and camping on Mount Desert Island.

Occasionally, Rob appears with faculty and students playing guitar at "Expressions", a local pub, and the Mile-Of-Art Show.  Rob is fascinated with the combined artistic/architectural/engineering accomplishments of Renaissance greats, such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci ...in addition to modern-day Santiago Calatrava ... with the result that he greatly enjoys encouraging students to attend a variety of monthly art openings and visits to museums, in addition to frequent field trips to see works of architecture, engineering, and the Boston Architectural College student exhibits.

Roger Richmond - Professor of Architecture

Roger RichmondStudent's Choice Faculty of the Year for 2001, Professor Richmond is a registered architect and holds a Master of Arts in Architecture Degree from the University of Florida. He was the first and only architect at the time commissioned by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in Houston, to design zero and "artificial" gravity living environments on space stations and planetary fly-by missions. His work and research for NASA continued at the University of Pennsylvania while working on a Ph.D. and studying conceptual architectural design in the World Masters Class of Louis Kahn.

He was an assistant professor of Architecture at North Dakota State University, and an instructor in architectural design at the University of Southern Maine and the Maine College of Art. He is now Professor of Architecture in the B. A. in Architecture program he helped create at the University of Maine, Augusta. Professionally he is a partner in SpaceTherapy®, a design analysis firm, and has completed work on his book Manipulating Spaces (What We Do To Them And What They Do To Us) now used as a text in the studio design course, and which was designed as a companion book to his interactive television course on design theory and creative awareness.

In addition to Professor Richmond's academic pursuits, his artwork has won regional and national awards, and he has been published both here and abroad. Professor Richmond is the national competition winner for Maine's Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He has given workshops on glass art design and construction through his studio, and by special invitation, conducted a workshop on glass art in Kobe, Japan. He is a 3-D photographer and gives 3-dimensional slide presentations on art and architecture throughout New England and internationally.

Morris HancockAn Adjunct Professor at UMA since 1993, Morris holds an A.B. in Architecture from The University of Pennsylvania (1974) and a B. Arch. from Cornell University (1981). His early work focused on college campus planning as Campus Architect for Bryn Mawr College and Princeton (NJ) Theological Seminary. He currently is a licensed architect with a practice in based in Freeport since 1988. In this role he has been responsible for the design of schools, churches, and numerous private houses.

Long an active member of the American Institute of Architects, Morris served on the Board of Directors of the Maine Chapter from 1990 until 1996, President in 1992. He served a term on the Board of Directors of the National AIA in Washington, D.C. from 1992 through 1995 and was named a Richard Upjohn Fellow. He serves currently on AIA Maine’s Committee On The Environment. In addition, Morris is an author and an editor of the Institute’s publication, The Architect’s Handbook Of Professional Practice, 13th Edition.

An ardent conservationist, he has been a leader of the Maine Island Trail Association since 1989, serving as its President from 1998 through 2001, and continuing to the present as an advisor and honorary Trustee.

The 2007-2008 Commodore of the Harraseeket Yacht Club, Morris is an avid sailor and a student of yacht design. He and his wife enjoy exploring the New England coast and offshore islands aboard a 1967 Hinckley sloop which they have been restoring since 2000.

Amy Hinkley - Adjunct Professor of Architecture

Amy HinkleyProfessor Hinkley graduated from Cornell University with a B.Arch in 1994, with awards in both design and outstanding achievement.  After working at several architectural firms in Illinois and Massachusetts, she moved back to Maine with her husband to raise their three boys and live on their family's farm.

A registered architect in Maine and Massachusetts, Professor Hinkley maintains a solo architectural practice in North Waldoboro, working out of a small studio on their farm. Recent projects have included work for Yale University's Sustainable Food Project, several projects for the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, and a phased restoration of 15 historic buildings at Kalaupapa National Historical Park, a National Historic Landmark on the island of Molokai in Hawaii.   Professor Hinkley was recently one of the winners in the Maine State Housing Authorities "MaineStream" Affordable Housing Prototype competition.

Professor Hinkley's interests in architecture center on building systems and construction methodology, as well as larger issues of landscape, site and community.
