Basic Community Policing Training

Community Policing is an organization-wide policing philosophy and management approach that promotes community, government, and police partnerships and supports organizational strategies to address the causes, and reduce the fear of, crime and social disorder through problem-solving styles and community-police partnerships.  Community Policing IS NOT soft on crime, "touchy-feely", social work, or a trend or program.

Community Policing is meant to build upon but not replace the type of policing we do now.  It is a fundamental shift from a traditional, reactive policing to a collaborative, proactive approach to problem solving within the community.  Changing the way we do the job and understanding what practices work best improve the quality of life and are key elements of effective Community Policing.

BTCP is offered exclusively through the Maine Institute for Public Safety Innovations (MIPSI).  Our staff of trained professionals will come to your organization (or a place designated for training) to present this two-day, hands-on Basic Training for Community Policing class.

The class will be split into several teams and participants work with others from their team to analyze problem scenarios.

BTCP students will be able to identify the information, knowledge, and skills needed to respond to an issue and acquire new knowledge and skills, select appropriate responses, and analyze the impact of this response.

MIPSI uses the Adult Learning Model as their preferred method of teaching.  This means you get the best instruction, hands-on experience, and a fun learning environment.

Everyone can afford a BTCP class!  BTCP classes are free to in-state training, Maine agencies only.  A nominal fee to cover travel, hotel accommodations, and instructor fees apply to agencies outside of Maine who wish to host this training.

Contact the MIPSI Training Coordinator for more information at (207) 621-3418 or send email to genovese@maine.edu.  You can also visit the MIPSI web site for other training programs we offer and to learn more about our organization or visit the MIPSI Upcoming Events and Training page to see the date, time, and location of a BTCP class coming to your area.
