Bachelor of Arts in Biology, MLT 2+2

The following requirements are effective for students admitted on or after Fall 2017:

  • Minimum 122-124 Credit Hours
  • Writing Intensive Course
  • Minimum Cumulative G.P.A.: 2.00
  • 30 Credit Hours of Residency Courses
  • 9 Credits of Upper-Level Major Residency Courses
  • Minimum G.P.A. in the Major: 2.00
  • Minimum Grade of “C-” or better in 30 upper-level credits as well as all upper-level courses required in the major

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may qualify for admissions by completing comparable course work at UMA and will be admitted into the Pre-MLT track. Enrollment in the Biology MLT 2+2 does not guarantee admissions to the MLT courses.

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • High School Biology with lab or BIO 110 must be passed with a “C-” or higher
  • High School Chemistry with Lab or CHY 100 must be passed with a “C-” or higher
  • ENG 100 Introduction to Academic Reading & Writing or course waiver
  • MAT 111 Algebra II or higher level algebra course or course waiver
  • 2.00 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher

All BIO, CHY, and MLT courses must be passed with a grade of C+ or higer

  • BIO 110 General Biology I (4)
  • BIO 210 Anatomy & Physiology (4)
  • BIO 321 Microbiology (4) 
  • CHY 115 General Chemistry I (4)
  • CHY 116 General Chemistry II (4)
  • MAT 115 Elementary Statistics I (3)
  • MLT 100 Orientation and Clinical Chemistry I (3)

  • MLT 105 Urinalysis (3)
  • MLT 203 Clinical Chemistry II & Immunology (3)
  • MLT 204 Clinical Microbiology (4)
  • MLT 205 Immunohematology (4)
  • MLT 206 Hematology (4)
  • MLT 395 Hospital Practicum (12)

OR

  • An Associate Degree in Medial Laboratory Technology from an NAACLS accredited program.

Students must complete the MLT program in three years once they begin the MLT courses.

To complete the AS in MLT from UMA prior to completing the Biology degree, students must also complete the following requirements as listed under the “other program requirements” section, which also meet the Biology requirements:

  • 100-level communications elective
  • ENG 101 College Writing
  • one Writing Intensive course (ENG 102w recommended)
  • one Fine Arts or Humanities Elective (satisfied with ENG 102W)
  • One Social Science elective (see options under “other program requirements” section)
  • BIO 111 General Biology II (4)
  • BIO 320 Principles of Genetics (3)
  • BIO 322 Biochemistry (3)
  • BIO 324 Cell Biology (3)
  • Complete any 400-level Biology course (3) Capstone Course
  • Complete one of the following courses (4):
    • CHY 117 Introductory Organic & Biological Chemistry
    • CHY 211 Organic Chemistry I
  • PHY 115 General Physics I (4)
  • PHY 116 General Physics II (4)
  • MAT 124 Pre-Calculus (3) or higher-level MAT course
  • Complete any 100-level Communications course (3)
  • Complete one of the following Computer Information Systems electives (3):
    • CIS 100 Introduction to Computer Applications
    • CIS 101 Introduction to Computer Science
  • ENG 101 College Writing (3)
  • ENG 102W Introduction to Literature (3)
  • ENG 317W Professional Writing (3)
  • Complete one of the following Fine Arts Electives (3):
    • ART 1xx any 100-level Art course

  • Complete a two-semester sequence of the same Foreign or American Sign language or history sequence (6-8)

    • PHI xxx any Philosophy course (except PHI 135 or 335)
    • SPA xxx any Spanish course
    • WGS xxx any Women and Gender Studies course
  • Complete two of the following Social Science electives (6):
    must be from two different disciplines

    • ANT 1xx any 100-level Anthropology course
    • ECO 1xx any 100-level Economics course
    • ECO 201 Macroeconomics
    • ECO 202 Microeconomics
    • JUS 1xx any 100-level Justice Studies course
    • POS 1xx any 100-level Political Science course

    • SOC 1xx any 100-level Sociology course
    • SSC 1xx any 100-level Social Science course
  • To complete the ASMLT degree prior to completing the BABIO degree, students must complete the communications requirement, ENG 101, one social science elective, a fine arts or humanities elective, and a writing intensive elective (ENG 102W recommended).
  • Students who are not admitted to the MLT program must complete all requirements for the BA in Biology degree to complete the program. The Biology requirements can be found here.
