The following requirements are effective for students admitted on or after Fall 2017:

Available content areas: Art (K-12 – 620); English (7-12 – 100); Life Science (7-12 – 395); Physical Science (7-12 – 350); Mathematics (7-12 – 300); Social Studies (7-12 – 200); Health (K-12 – 520)

UMA Certificate Requirements

  • Minimum 50% of the required courses taken through UMA

UMA Education Department Requirements for Student Teaching:

  • Minimum 2.5 G.P.A. overall
  • Minimum 3.0 G.P.A. in education classes

Certificate Requirements (38 credit hours)

  • EDU 100 Introduction to Teacher Education at UMA (1) prerequisite for upper-level methods and admittance to candidacy
  • EDU 250 Foundations of Education (3) prerequisite for upper-level methods and admittance to candidacy
  • EDU 251 The Teaching Process (3) prerequisite for upper-level methods and admittance to candidacy
  • Application to candidacy
  • EDU 380 Digital Literacy and Technology in Schools (3)
  • EDU 385 Teaching Writing int he Content Areas 6-12 (3)
  • EDU 387 Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom (3)
  • Complete one of the following courses (3):
    • EDU 210 Dimensions of Literacy
    • EDU/ENG 315 Mentoring Writers
    • EDU 366 Children’s and Young Adult Literature
    • EDU 300W Teacher as Researcher
    • EDU/SOC 331 Sociology of Education
    • EDU/PSY 401 Educational Psychology
  • EDU 395 Field Experience (4) Prerequisites: In addition to EDU 250 & 251, passing scores on the Praxis Core
  • EDU 390W Secondary Methods of Teaching (3) Prerequisites: In addition to EDU 250 & 251, passing scores on the Praxis Core; permission needed to enroll
  • EDU 399 Student Teaching Seminar (3) taken concurrently with EDU 490
  • EDU 490 Internship in Student Teaching (9) application required for enrollment

Additional Certification Requirements:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree from a Regionally Accredited Institution
  • At least 24 credit hours in the content area (Art, English, Life Science, Physical Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Health)

  • Licensure assessments needed for certification: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, Praxis II, Principles of Learning and Teaching
  • Criminal History Record Check – completed through MDOE certification office – (must be completed before upper level methods)
