“My personal interests are in the graphic novel, painting, drawing, and contemporary art practice and theory. I believe that the keys to an arts education are a synthesis of: individual facility, knowledge of contemporary studio practice and art history, making work of personal resonance, and a commitment to both craft and community. The artist needs the community as much as community needs artists.”

Peter Precourt, Associate Professor of Art and the Art Area Coordinator, began teaching at the University of Maine at Augusta in 2006. He lives and works in Winthrop, Maine, with his wife and two children.   Perhaps his most innovative work has been in the development of team teaching and civic engagement at UMA.  As part of his commitment to community he has recently transformed an empty storefront in Winthrop Maine into his working studio and exhibition space.

Prior to joining UMA, Professor Precourt taught at William Carey University, the University of Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Glassell School. He also served as an Education Associate, Curator and the initial Teen Council Coordinator at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Professionally, Peter has an extensive body of studio work focused primarily in Painting, Drawing and the Graphic Novel. He has exhibited his paintings, drawings and prints in Maine, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Rhode Island, and Texas. He has curated three exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and has published essays in several of their exhibition catalogues.
