AME 305 Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality in American Culture
Considering issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, or nationality in narrow, isolated examples is impossible and undesirable if we hope to have a fuller understanding of the patterns, realities, and possibilities of identity, power, culture, and politics in American culture. All of these complex and contradictory dimensions contribute to our identities and material realities as well to our place in relationship to social structures and power relationships. We will consider intersections in the past, present, and future including both local and transnational context. We will consider how we might move beyond the limits of identity politics toward a radical politics of empowerment, justice, and transformation. 3 credit hours. Prerequisite: WST 101 or AME 201 or Permission of the instructor.
