The acclaimed New York-based pianist/composer Frank Carlberg brings his quintet to the University of Maine at Augusta for a concert and master class on Thursday, October 24.  Carlberg's ensemble of top New York musicians will premiere his "Word Circus,"  a jazz song-cycle commissioned by Chamber Music America.  Along with pianist Carlberg, the group includes vocalist Christine Correa, saxophonist John O'Gallagher, bassist John Hebert, and drummer Michael Sarin.  "Word Circus" features Carlberg's musical settings of contemporary poetry by Jim Gustafson, Ron Padgett, Ken Mikolowski, Anselm Berrigan,

Anselm Hollo and Joe Elliot.  The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Jewett Hall Auditorium and the master class will also be held in Jewett Hall Auditorium, at 3:30 p.m.  Both events are free and open to the public.  No tickets or reservations are required.

Irreverant and innovative, The Frank Carlberg Quintet has been a powerful force on the international jazz scene for over ten years.  Their recent recording "The American Dream" received wide critical acclaim and features settings to poetry by Robert Creely.  All About Jazz called the CD “a masterful feast of music that suggests a beautiful portrait of Creeley’s poetry—joyous, reflective, plaintive, hopeful, and always radiating with great humanity.”
