
Associate of Science in Financial Services
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Associate of Science in Financial Services is a professional degree program designed to prepare students for careers in insurance, investments, finance, or banking. This program provides students with a specialized study in financial services complimented by a general education core curriculum, courses in accounting, economics, and computer information systems, as well as courses in the arts, humanities, and natural sciences. At the time of graduation, the students should have:
- a well-rounded understanding of the major functional areas of financial services including:
- the ability to prepare, read analyze and communicate financial information
- an understanding of the U.S. banking system and its regulation, examination, and control
- a thorough understanding of the consumer credit function and the significance within the banking system
- the ability to develop a life-term financial plan
- an understanding of the role of life, health, property, and casualty insurance in business and personal financial planning
- the ability to evaluate various types of investments in terms of their risks and potential returns
- well developed written and oral communications skills
- the ability to utilize current technology
- strong analytic and critical thinking skills
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics
DEGREE:
Upon successful completion of 64 credit hours (with a cumulative average of at least 2.00), the student will be awarded an associate of science in financial services degree. A minimum average of 2.00 in all financial services courses is required.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
- ENGLISH & COMMUNICATIONS: 9 credit hours from ENG101, COM101; and one of the following: COM102, 104, 2XX, or ENG317W
- FINE ARTS: 3 credit hours from ARH105, 106; ART211; DRA101, 265, 280; INT129; MUS123, 160, 180, 333, 334
- HUMANITIES: 3 credit hours from ENG102W, 202W, 203W, 250W, 251W; any HTY; any HUM; any PHI; POS390; WST101W
- NATURAL SCIENCE: 4 credit hours from any laboratory science
- COMPUTER SCIENCE: 6 credit hours from CIS135 plus any CIS course
- MATHEMATICS: 6 credit hours from MAT115 and one of the following: MAT111, 113, or 114
- SOCIAL SCIENCE: 9 credit hours from ECO201, 202, and PSY100
- BUSINESS: 6 credit hours from BUA101 and 211
- FINANCIAL SERVICES: 18 credit hours from BUA151, 210, 215, 217, 222, and 253
