Putting Your Personality to Work

Find out which career areas are most compatible with your personality.  Interpret the results of a personality style indicator (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) to gather insights for satisfying career and life choices.  Completed inventories must be returned to UMA at least 1 week prior to the workshop. ($20 fee for community members, $2 home mailing fee)

Generating Career Ideas

Unsure if you’re in the right major? Need help choosing a career path? Interpret the results of an interest inventory (Strong Interest Inventory) to generate career options. Rockin' Resume Writing**

The average shelf-life of a resume is about six months.  Need to update or create your resume?  Come to this workshop!  You'll be able to learn the basics of designing a resume, how to word some of those tricky job descriptions, and cover letters will also be discussed  Resume and cover letters for scholarship applications will also be covered pending student interest.

Making a Job Fair Work For You**

Use job fairs to your advantage! In this workshop, you will be able to find out how to best prepare yourself for entering a job fair. Topics include making the best professional impression, what to bring (or not bring) to a job fair, networking, and what to do after the big event. Transportation to the UMaine Career Fair on 2/1/12 and the USM Job Fair on 3/6/11 provided!

Connecting Social Media to Your Job Search**

Want to bring your job search into the 21st Century? This workshop will give an overview of how to use social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more) to strengthen your job search skills. Intriguing Internships

Looking to gain valuable experience for your major? This workshop will go over the nuts and bolts of internships (paid vs. unpaid, academic credit), how/when to search for internships, and important information about what is legally required of interns and employers.

To access the site the first time, you must self-enroll using the following steps:

1. 1. Log into Blackboard (www.courses.maine.edu) with your "@maine.edu" username and password.
   2. Click on the Courses tab (top left of your screen, between the Home tab and the Community tab).
   3. On the left-hand side of the screen you will see a Course Search box. Type in "Advising Center" and click Go.
   4. Under the Course ID column you will see "DEV_A_ADVISE." Click the drop-down menu directly to the right and select Enroll.
   5. Click Submit, then on the next screen click OK.

Once you have self-enrolled, the UMA Advising Center link will appear in your My Courses list (where all of your Blackboard courses appear) whenever you log into Blackboard.
