Associate of Arts in Art
OBJECTIVES:
A dynamic, two-year curriculum prepares the student for entry into the art field, or admission to baccalaureate degree programs. Currently there are two tracks within the program, one for internal transfer into our liberal arts oriented bachelor of arts (B. A.) in art program offered jointly by UMA and UMF, as well as a more "professional" bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) track. Along with our B. A. and B.F.A. tracks, students may opt for a concentration in computer imaging. Courses in drawing, painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, art history, art theory and photography provide a solid foundation in art. The curriculum also includes a complement of liberal arts courses, assuring a well-rounded, yet intensive, education.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- minimum English language competency permitting registration in ENG005 and REA008 or higher
ADVISING:
All students are required to meet with their advisors prior to registration. An advisor's signature or electronic equivalent is required for registration. Students are encouraged to continue to meet with their advisors on a regular basis to help ensure a productive and meaningful college experience.
TRANSFER:
The curriculum is designed to allow an internal 2+2 into our own bachelor of arts in art degree. A student on the bachelor of fine arts track has a course of study permitting maximum transferability to another college; however, the receiving institution makes the final decision on the transfer of credit, usually on the basis of a portfolio. Those who plan to transfer to specific institutions and programs should work closely with advisors in selecting courses at UMA.
Since not all students plan to transfer, the concentrated studio course work is intended to quickly develop skills which can then be pursued independently.
UMA has a 2+2 agreement with the University of Southern Maine whereby students who complete the associate of arts in art degree program may transfer to USM and earn a baccalaureate degree in one of several areas. Under this arrangement, students receive the benefits of two distinctive campuses. For details on this program, contact the art department coordinator.
DEGREE:
Upon successful completion of the program (61 hours at a minimum GPA of 2.00) the student will be awarded an associate of arts in art degree.
