PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The curriculum in the associate of science in mental health and human services is comprised of human services general and specialized courses, social science courses, liberal arts courses, and field placements. The supervised field placements provide students with opportunities to develop, apply, and practice skills that relate to competencies critical to working in the field of human services.
Program graduates are employed in a variety of community-based settings such as group homes, drug and alcohol treatment programs, child care centers, rehabilitation programs, preschools, public schools, nursing homes, outreach programs for the elderly, and crisis services. Upon completion of the program students will be able to:
- screen clients for service eligibility, conduct intake histories and make appropriate referrals to services
- advocate for clients, implement service plan objectives and recommend community support for clients
- write individualized support plans
- assist clients in achieving the goals of adequate housing, nutrition and entitlement as well as protection of their rights
- utilize a variety of interviewing techniques to help clients solve their problems and deal effectively with their situations
- identify ethical issues related to human services and mental health services
- seek employment in a variety of human services settings where they will apply their acquired knowledge and skills
- successfully transfer into appropriate baccalaureate programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Mental Health and Human Services
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are admitted for both the fall and spring semesters and may attend full or part time. A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for admission. Students needing preparatory work in reading, English, or mathematics may need additional time to complete all degree requirements.
TRANSFER:
The associate degree program curriculum is designed to prepare students to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills suitable for entry-level positions in many human service agencies. Students wishing to continue their education may transfer to baccalaureate programs. All credits earned for the associate of science in mental health and human services degree will transfer to the bachelor of science in mental health and human services degree and the bachelor of arts in social science degree. Graduates will enter these programs with third-year standing. For students interested in human services administration, a transfer opportunity exists with junior standing to the bachelor of science in public administration degree.
DEGREE:
Upon successful completion of the program requirements (62 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.00), the student will be awarded an associate of science in human services degree.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
- ENGLISH & COMMUNICATIONS: 6 credit hours from ENG101 and COM101, 102, 104 or 106
- MATH: 3 credit hours from MAT100 or higher level
- NATURAL SCIENCE: any laboratory science
- HUMANITIES: 3 credit hours from ENG102w or WST101w
- FINE ARTS: 3 credit hours from ARH105,106; ART211; DRA101, 265, 280; INT129; MUS123, 160, 180, 333, 334
- SOCIAL SCIENCE: 12 credit hours from PSY100, 308; SOC101, 201
- MENTAL HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES MAJOR: COL214; HUS101, 204, PSY330; PSY218 or HUS220; PSY220 or HUS130; PSY232 or HUS221; and 6 credits from the following: HUS125, 160, 212, 215, 224, 233, 261, 326 or SSC331, PSY350, SOC305
- FREE ELECTIVES: 6 credit hours
