GENERAL INFORMATION:
The College of Natural & Social Sciences offers a variety of professional-oriented degree programs leading to associate and baccalaureate degrees. The college delivers its degree programs at the Augusta and Bangor campuses as well as delivering selected degree programs on a statewide basis.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Information on entrance requirements is found within the specific degree program descriptions in this catalog. In general, associate degrees offer open admission status while baccalaureate programs have a more selective admissions policy. All the College's associate degrees are clearly articulated to permit ease of internal or external course transfer to desired baccalaureate programs. If a degree program offers concentrations within a major, students should declare the concentration at the time of admission. Students may change their major or concentration at any time by completing a "change of program" card. When students matriculate in a degree program, they should receive a program checklist.
ACADEMIC ADVISING:
Upon entering a degree program, students are matched with a faculty member who will act as their academic advisor during their course of study. Students are encouraged to meet with their dvisor regularly. Reasonable and responsible alternatives are available, especially for students studying at a distance and during the summer months. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Biology degree are required to have the advisor's signature prior to course registration.
ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR LEARNING:
An assessment of prior learning (APL) process is available to students enrolled in certain certificate programs as well as the associate of science in human services degree. Course credit is awarded to students who have accumulated two or more years of work experience in the social service/human service field and who have successfully completed the portfolio (APL) process. Call the Advising Center or the college office for further information regarding the assessment of prior learning.
TRANSFERS:
A flexible policy allows students to transfer an optimum number of credits from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Transcripts are evaluated in the admissions process and that analysis is forwarded to the College as well as to the student.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
In order to graduate from the College, students must be in good academic standing, i.e., not on academic probation. Any student who was admitted on a "conditional" status, must have this condition removed. In addition, the following criteria must be satisfied:
- Baccalaureate degrees: Completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours with an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00. Some degrees may have different credit hour and GPA requirements. Students must check and conform to the specific standards of their chosen degree program.
- Associate degrees: Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours with an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00. Some degrees may have different credit hour and GPA requirements. Students must check and conform to the specific standards of their chosen degree program.
- Satisfactory completion of UMA's General Education Requirements.
