UMA Secondary Education Teacher Certification Pathway: Certificate of Study

This certificate of study is designed for those who possess a baccalaureate degree and wish to become certified to teach.
 
Maine requires public high school teachers to earn certification and endorsements in the subjects they teach. In addition, some private schools may require certification. Endorsements include but are not limited to English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Life Science, Physical Science, Art, and Music,  UMA offers a Certificate of Study in Secondary Education that provides the education courses and a student teaching internship required by the Maine Department of Education. A complete listing of Maine Department of Education Certificates and Endorsements is included in Chapter 115 Part II available at the Maine DOE website. The Department of Education requires secondary teachers to have at least 24 credit hours in the subject they wish to teach.

RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE  FOR CERTIFICATE OF STUDY IN SECONDARY EDUCATION
 

EDU 250 Foundations of Education (3 credits)  NOTE: There is a DANTES exam that is available for EDU 250. The exam is available through the Advising Center.  The test fee is $80.00; the service fee is $25.00. The exam is administered twice monthly except in August and January. Success on the exam waives the requirement for this course and provides you with three credits. Suggested study materials and sample questions can be found here.

  • Complete Praxis™ Core Academic Skills for Educators. Qualifying scores - Reading: 156; Writing: 162; Mathematics: 150. Applicants must achieve a composite score of 468 on the three sections of the Core Academic Skills for Educators with no single score on any section being more than three points lower than the required score of 468.  PRAXIS I scores will be accepted until 8.31.2018.
  • EDU 380 Digital Literacy and Technology (3 credits) 
  • EDU 387 Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom (3 credits) T
  • EDU XXX Education elective (3 credits)  For example: EDU 401 Educational Psychology, EDU 331 Sociology of Education, EDU 366 Young Adult and Children's Literature, EDU 300 Teacher as Researcher, EDU 210 Dimensions of Literacy (can be taken at any time)
  • PRAXIS II content assessment passed, attempted, or scheduled.  Have scores sent to UMA.

  • EDU 390 Secondary Teaching Methods  (3 credits)  COURSE PREREQUISITES: EDU 387 or equivalencies. OTHER PREREQUISITES: PRAXIS Core passed; PRAXIS II attempted or scheduled; MDOE fingerprinting must be completed prior to field observation.
  • PRAXIS II content assessment passed. See passing scores above.
  • PRAXIS II - Principles of Learning and Teaching assessment (fee) scheduled before or during EDU 490. Have scores sent to UMA.
  • EDU 490 Internship in Student Teaching (15 credits) PREREQUISITES: EDU 390, EDU 387. equivalencies or permission. OTHER PREREQUISITES: PRAXIS Core AND II passed.
