Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems is an applied computing degree whose graduates will be prepared for careers as programmers, network administrators, information system developers, and information technology managers.

The degree will help meet the growing demand for information technology professionals in Central Maine and beyond. Based on the national contemporary information systems curriculum (IS '2002/IS2010'), the UMA curriculum provides a core of computer science and discrete mathematics, hardware and operating systems, networking, management information systems, information systems modeling, database design, applications development, management of information technology, and the impact of computing.

Core foundation courses are complemented by over twenty electives. The object-oriented paradigm and networked applications are emphasized across the curriculum, as are listening skills, oral and written, presentations, and teamwork.

The program requires an internship experience to provide real-world work experience desired by employers for students without previous information technology experience.

The modernized check sheet, effective fall 2014, has a consistent set of core requirements for the A.S. B.S. and P.B.S in Computer Information Systems with five areas of concentration as well as a "no concentration" option.

  1. Programming
  2. Database
  3. Security
  4. Networking
  5. Web Design and Development
