David Wells began playing saxophone in Novato, CA as a fifth grader after studying piano from the age of four. He was blessed to study with two of the Bay Area's greatest saxophonists and teachers, Ron Stallings (Huey Lewis and the News), and fellow Novato resident Mel Martin (Saxophone Journal and Jazz Improv columnist). Aside from his teachers, David's earliest influences on saxophone were Stan Getz, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Gene Ammons, and Kenny Garrett. He graduated from San Marin H.S. in 1993 and played lead alto in the California All State Jazz Band that year. He continued his musical education at University of Colorado and California State University Hayward. During these years he had the honor of performing with an amazing list of musicians, including Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Conrad Herwig, Bob Berg, Louie Bellson, Red Holloway, Conte Condoli, Gerald Wilson, and Anthony Wilson. He also participated in clinics and masterclasses by greats Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, and Hal Galper. David has studied privately with George Garzone, Kenny Brooks, David Demsey, Larry Schneider, and Daniel Zinn.

David has recorded or performed with Rosemary Clooney, Matt Catingub, Bob Mintzer, New York Voices, John Handy, Mark Levine, Scott Amendola, funk pioneer Zigaboo Modeliste, and comedian Don Rickles. He was a featured soloist the the PBS documentary "Swing It" with Rosemary Clooney, Lionel Hampton, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He has performed in the United States, Europe, and Hawaii at such venues & festivals as Ronnie Scott's, Kimball's East, The Derby, Stuttgart Jazz Festival, Concord-Fujitsu Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, Portsmouth Jazz Festival, and the Berklee College of Music.

David teaches saxophone, improvisation, and directs ensembles at University of Maine at Augusta. He also teaches saxophone at Bates College. In addition to teaching at the university level, David directs the award-winning Westbrook High School jazz combo and has a large private studio teaching both saxophone and improvisation.
