Competencies/ Outcomes:
Upon satisfactory completion of DEH 380 Preclinical Expanded Functions and DEH381 Clinical Expanded Functions, the student will be able to demonstrate competence in the following areas:
Professionalism
The student will be able to:
- Provide ethical, legal, compassionate care without discrimination and with respect for confidentiality of patient information
- Communicate effectively; provide explanations of procedures and respond to patients' questions & concerns; interact professionally with colleagues
Patient care
The student will be able to:
- Ensure the health & safety of the patient during the delivery of EFDA services
- Perform competently all of the following expanded functions permitted by the Board of dental examiners:
- Place & remove rubber dam
- Place & contour amalgam, composite & other restorative materials prior to final setting and/or curing
- Supragingival polishing
- Cement provisional/temporary crowns & bridges and remove excess cement
- Perform pulp vitality tests
- Place & remove retraction cord
- Place & remove periodontal dressing
- Size, place & cement/bond orthodontic bands & brackets
- Apply topical fluoride, desensitizing agents and pit & fissure sealants
- Use slow speed instrumentation for removing composite material when Debonding orthodontic brackets
- Take impressions for study casts, bleaching trays, sports guards and provisional/temporary crown and bridges
- Maintain accurate and thorough treatment records
Admission Requirements :
- At least 18 years of age
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Current CDA or RDH with active license in good standing with the Maine Board of Dental Examiners
- At least 1 calendar year full time or 2 years part time employment in clinical practice (within the past 5 years)
- Certified in Healthcare CPR throughout the courses
- Letter of recommendation from dental employer
- Proof of selective immunizations, titres & health insurance
- Standard UMA Application for Admission, or Re-admission if the student graduated from UMA Bangor (forms appended)
Applications will be reviewed beginning in February and remain open until the class is fully enrolled
Enrollment is limited to 12 students per year
