PREREQUISITES FOR STUDENT TEACHING AT UMPI

Students who apply to complete their elementary level student teaching through UMPI must have:

  • Complete all course requirements for a UMA degree except student teaching.
  • Earned an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Completed six credit hours in each of the following subject areas: mathematics, English, social studies, and science
  • Passed all three sections of or achieved a passing composite score on the PRAXIS I examination. NOTE: This assessment will change in fall 2013 to Praxis™ Core Academic Skills for Educators. New cut scores will be published as soon as they are available.
  • Passed the PRAXIS II examination in General Education Content Knowledge.
  • Met the State of Maine requirements for fingerprinting.
  • Obtained the signature of your UMA advisor or the Coordinator of Teacher Certification verifying you are eligible for student teaching..
  • An education portfolio organized around Maine's Initial Teacher Standards must be set up prior to student teaching. Evidence of meeting all eleven standards must be demonstrated in the portfolio to the University supervisor and/or cooperating school staff at the conclusion of student teaching.
