The civic engagement essay contest is a way to gauge which issues are important to UMA/UCB students. There will be five winning essays chosen, and the winners will receive the following prizes:

  • First Place: One free class in the spring semester, sponsored by University Credit Union
  • Second Place: $100 UMA bookstore gift certificate
  • Third Place: $50 UMA bookstore gift certificate
  • Fourth Place: $25 bookstore gift certificate
  • Fifth Place: $25 bookstore gift certificate

Not only will the winner of the essay contest receive a free class, but the winning essay will also be submitted as an editorial to the Bangor Daily News. While we can't guarantee it will be printed, there's a good possibility it will be. Along with University Credit Union, we will also be coordinating a 5K run/walk in the spring, and the money raised will be donated to the issue written about in the winning essay.
