ARCHITECTURE

The University of Maine at Augusta (www.uma.edu) is one of seven universities in the University of Maine System.  Its main campus is located in Augusta, Maine's capital city, and is surrounded by scenic lake country and is readily accessible to winter and coastal recreational areas for which Maine is famous.  UMA has a second campus located in Bangor, a city located in the heart of Maine.  Bangor offers residents, and visitors alike, the best of both worlds:  a friendly city that's filled with excitement, opportunity and activity, and serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of Maine.

Known for its high-quality student support services and strong, caring faculty, UMA serves a mix of both traditional and non-traditional students and offers a wide array of educational programs including certificates, Associate's degrees, and Baccalaureate degrees.  UMA has a rich history in distance education and has a strong support system in place to facilitate course design and delivery.   Educational programs are delivered through a network of University centers and sites located in eight regions of the state, via many distance education modalities, including statewide interactive television, video conferencing, and web-based instruction.

Faculty positions require teaching on our Augusta and/or Bangor campuses and/or at University College Centers; student advising; curriculum development; research and scholarship; university and community service; and will be expected to serve on various committees.  The successful candidate will also be expected to teach via one or more of the distance education modalities utilized by the University:  interactive television, video conferencing, and web-based instruction.

The University of Maine at Augusta is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track design-studio instructor in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Architecture Program.  The position will be available starting in the fall semester of 2012.  The BA in Architecture at UMA is a fast-growing, pre-professional program.  UMA is developing a five-year B-Arch degree and NAAB accreditation. UMA/ARC's mission: We Engage Community has been greatly supported by our recent move to new teaching and studio space located in downtown Augusta.  Our curriculum emphasizes a design-with-intent based approach to student project solutions.  The impact of designed space, with a focus in sustainability and psycho/social factors on user behavior and experience, forms the major curriculum goal in the BA studio program.

UMA is looking for a candidate with a minimum of a terminal professional degree, a professional architecture license (active or inactive), 2-3 years of teaching experience at the college level, and possession of a record of recognized scholarly, creative and/or professional work.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach a wide range of design studio courses from a first-year, hand-drawing graphics class to fifth-year capstone thesis. The preferred candidate will have the capacity to offer seminar and lectures courses on related topics such as Construction/Fabrication or Design Media/Computer related technologies.  The applicant will be expected to be of service at the department, college, university, and community levels and be responsible for committed student advising, recruitment, and other extra-curricular activities associated with developing the Architecture program.  Experience with current design and graphics computer applications is preferred.  Community work, especially that relating to the practice of architecture, is preferred.

Salary:  The normal hiring range for this position is middle-to-high forties, dependent upon experience and qualifications.  The University offers an excellent fringe benefits package.

Review of applications will begin immediately.  Applications received after January 15, 2012 will be reviewed at the discretion of the University.  Please submit a cover letter; C.V./resume; official transcripts; the names, addresses, email addresses, and daytime phone numbers of three professional references; and five samples each of professional and student work in digital/CD format to:  Administrative Services, Architecture Faculty Search, University of Maine at Augusta, 46 University Drive, Augusta, ME  04330.

We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and provide reasonable

accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities upon request.

The University of Maine at Augusta encourages and values diversity among its students, faculty, and staff.

UMA is a member of the University of Maine System.
