Grants
Grants are financial aid awards that do not have to be repaid. They are usually based on calculated financial need. Although grants are always in great demand, grant funds are limited. For this reason, they are usually reserved for students who show the highest financial need and apply before the UMA priority dates.
Grants for UMA students are available from a variety of sources.
Federal Government Grants
Federal PELL Grant (PELL)
These grants are need-based and calculated based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the student's enrollment status. Currently, PELL Grants range from $400 to $4000 per academic year. For more information on PELL Grants, click here.
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This federally-funded program is intended for undergraduate students demonstrating need by filing the FAFSA. Awards range from $100 to $4000 per academic year based on availability of funds. For more information on FSEOG, click here.
Maine State Grant Program
The Maine State Grant Program offers a need-based state grant award to Maine undergraduate students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serves as the application for the Maine State Grant Program.
To be eligible for an award under the Maine State Grant Program, the Federal Processing Agency must receive the FAFSA by May 1. This deadline is critical.
If eligible, a student will receive an award notice in August. However, if a student is not eligible to receive an award under this program, no notification letter is sent. The awards are as follows for:
- In-State Public Institutions $1,000 (for full-time study)
- Out-of-State Public Institutions $500 (for full-time study)*
- In-State Private Institutions $1,250 (for full-time study)
- Out-of-State Private Institutions $1,000 (for full-time study)*
A limited number of grants of $500 are available for part-time study.
In order to be eligible for an out-of-state private or public Maine State Grant Program grant, you must attend a higher education institution in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania or the District of Columbia.
