Scholarships H-Z

Scholarships are financial awards which do not have to be repaid. UMA students have an opportunity to apply for a number of scholarships as a result of funding made available by the University of Maine at Augusta, the University of Maine System, and generous donations by organizations and individuals to UMA’s scholarship fund.

C. Richard Haskell Scholarship
  • Awarded to student’s from the Greater Portland area
  • Active participation in athletics and recreational activities

Edna L. Higgins Scholarship
  • Awarded to student’s from the Greater Portland area
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
General Edmund W. Hill Scholarship
  • Awarded to a worthy student
  • General Scholarship Application**
  • Application available in December: due by March 1
Lloyd J. Jewett Scholarship
  • Strong academic standing
  • Resides in Kennebec Valley area
  • Preference given to part-time students

Bennett D. Katz Scholarship
  • Current Student
  • Good academic standing
  • Active participation in athletics and recreational activities
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
Leadership and Service Scholarship
  • Current Student residing in Augusta area
  • Leadership & service to UMA
  • Demonstrated financial need*
  • General Scholarship Application**
  • Application available in December: due by March 1
The Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation Scholarship
  • Graduate of a Maine high school
  • Good academic standing
  • Enrolled full-time (12+ credit hours)
  • Augusta or Lewiston-Auburn campus student
  • Majoring in a Business related program such as Accounting, Business Management or Economics
  • Demonstrated financial need*
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
Don Pillsbury Memorial Scholarship
  • Pursing a degree in music
  • Demonstrated talent, ability, and motivation
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
Cecil E. Powers Scholarship
  • University College at Bangor (UCB) campus student
  • Majoring in Criminal Justice
  • Good academic standing
  • Demonstrated financial need*
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
Vivian B. Raymond Scholarship Fund
  • University College at Bangor (UCB) campus student
  • Completed a minimum of 30 credits
  • Single parent who has overcome hardship to attend UCB
  • Demonstrated financial need*
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives
Lila and Vernon Segal Fund
  • Awarded to students from Augusta, Manchester, or Winthrop
  • General Scholarship Application**
  • Application available in December: due by March 1
Martin & Molly Schwartz Scholarship
  • Single parents
  • Student’s income falls within eligibility guidelines for AFDC (TANF) plus 20 percent
  • Demonstrated financial need*

Student Government Association – Augusta Based
  • Current Augusta-based student
  • Completed 2 consecutive semesters Demonstrated campus leadership
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Kenneth C. Ward Scholarship
  • Currently a UMA freshman or sophomore
  • Demonstrated proficiency in math
  • No application required, selection made by UMA representatives

*Demonstrated Financial Need is determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must file the FAFSA prior to March 1 for each academic year in order to be considered.
**General Scholarship Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office and on various Sites and Centers from December 15 through the end of February.
