UMA Tapped as a Top Military Friendly School
UCB Veteran's Lounge
"Our designation as a Military Friendly School is yet another validation of UMA's longstanding commitment to serving both veterans and those currently in service to our nation," says Dean of Enrollment Services Jonathan Henry, Co-chair of UMA's Military and Veteran Affairs Advisory Council.
"Since its very founding, UMA has been dedicated to meeting the needs of veterans, and in the past couple of years, we have significantly strengthened our commitment through the implementation of our Military Achievement Project," adds Henry.
UMA's Military Achievement Project, funded in part through a $100,000 grant from the American Council of Education/Wal-Mart Foundation, has enabled the school to add staff dedicated to supporting veterans, open two new Veteran Lounges in Augusta and Bangor, implement a veteran peer mentor program, designate special course sections for veterans, and launch entrepreneurial training for veterans.
The Military Friendly Schools list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last April during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from several universities and representatives of veteran groups.
"The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience," says Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the list's Academic Advisory Board.
A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in late September. The list will also be showcased on www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, beginning in late September.
G.I. Jobs (www.gijobs.com) is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business which also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines and annually rates the nation's "Military Friendly Employers," "Military Spouse Friendly Employers" and "Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses."
