How do I Create an Internship Position?
Steps for Organizations Hosting an Internship
Here are some basic steps to get started:
- Decide what it is you want to accomplish with an internship program. Is it help with a project, finding employees with potential, managing growth, community service, or something else altogether?
- Write down your goals and draft a job description. Consider basics such as workspace, pay, the intern’s supervisor, required experience, duties, training you can offer him/her, and so forth. Learn the important legal implications of hosting internships. For example, see the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act as it applies to internships.
- Contact UMA’s Director of Business Internships and let us know you are looking for an intern. We are seeking opportunities for our students and will post your listing on this website. Search well in advance of your target date – students are required to register for classes months in advance. In order to get the best candidate, you may want to interview several. You will complete a learning agreement with your choice.
- When your intern is on board, you will want to be sure that you mentor and supervise the student carefully. Remember that the primary goal is education, even though it is applied. You’ll want to provide resources that help the student be successful and an orientation, no matter how informal. The field supervisor should answer questions, guide, and evaluate the intern’s progress.
- Contact UMA’s Director of Business Internships or more information and a useful handout on setting up your program. We are here to help you get set up if needed and to answer questions as you go along.
