The University of Maine at Augusta is seeking an experienced Instructional Developer with a Master’s degree or equivalent experience to provide hands-on technical support to faculty teaching online and teaching using Blackboard’s Course Management System. Duties include: adapting new technologies to accomplish the learning goals of courses; mastering a variety of applications and teaching faculty how to make the best use of them. The position will be based out of Augusta with routine travel to University College of Bangor and University Centers throughout the State of Maine. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent fringe-benefits package. Qualifications: Requirements: Master’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, or a closely-related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience; one or more years experience working with e-learning applications or course management systems; educational computing literacy; knowledge of the various technologies used in distance education; good written, oral, and interpersonal skills; willingness to travel to throughout the state on a regular basis; commitment to the value and critical role of distance education and e-learning in higher education. Preferences: higher education experience with blackboard; experience designing courses for delivery in an asynchronous format; one or more years of experience working with faculty in a higher education setting; previous teaching experience.

Job Description

  1. Title: Instructional Developer (new position Fall 2009)
    Department: UMA Libraries and Distance Learning
  2. Organizational Relationships
    1. Reports to: Dean of Libraries and Distance Learning
    2. Coordinates with Senior Instructional Designer
    3. Coordinates with: UMA faculty, as well as computing and educational media staff at UMA and UC
  3. Primary Purpose of Position
    1. Major Duties:
      1. Assists the Senior Instructional Designer in all areas of his or her responsibilities as needed, especially during the start up of semesters and summer sessions.
      2. Supports UMA by providing technical, hands-on technical support for faculty teaching online and using Blackboard's course management system and with other current or future instructional technologies.
      3. Adapts new technologies and develops applications in support of faculty pedagogy and the learning goals of the courses.
      4. Teaches UMA faculty and staff how to make best use of through one on one activities and in training seminars, conferences and workshops.
    2. Secondary Duties:
      1. Supports UMA's office of Professional Development (OPD)and other clients with instructional design needs to produce seminars and continuing education programming.
      2. Works with library staff, to select and purchase video, audio and digital materials to support distance education courses.
      3. Other duties as assigned.
  4. Supervisory Responsibilities:
    Student employees
    University employees who support instructional delivery for UMA
  5. Budget Responsibilities:
    Uses departmental resources according to all appropriate University of Maine System Accounting Practice Letters (APL)
  6. Public and Professional Activities:
    The Instructional Developer is responsible for maintaining knowledge of current research and methods in instructional design, instructional technology, distance education and distributed education
  7. Knowledge and Skill Qualifications
    REQUIRED:
    1. Masters degree in instructional design or instructional technology or closely related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered as an alternative to a masters degree.
    2. One year or more experience working with e-learning applications or course management systems.
    3. Good written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
    4. Willingness to travel to Bangor campus and University College Centers on a regular basis.
    5. Commitment to the concept of distance and e-learning.
    6. Educational computing literacy and knowledge of the various technologies used in distance education.
    PREFERRED:
    1. Blackboard experience in an educational environment is strongly preferred.
    2. Experience designing courses for delivery in an asynchronous format.
    3. One or more years of experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.
    4. Project management experience.
    5. Teaching experience (either-K-12 or higher education).
