
Instruction, Reference and Outreach Librarian
The University of Maine at Augusta's, Bennett D. Katz Library seeks an energetic, creative librarian with strong teaching/reference skills and a commitment to excellent service to fill the position of Instruction, Reference, and Outreach Librarian. This individual should have excellent organizational skills, be an effective and personable communicator, be able to cope well with change, and flexible enough to manage a variety of duties simultaneously.
Instruction responsibilities include developing, promoting, and teaching in our growing information literacy program. This person will also be responsible for creating teaching materials such as online tutorials, webpages, and print and online research guides. Reference responsibilities include providing on-campus and virtual reference services, and contributing to the development of UMA's print and electronic collections. The Instruction, Reference and Outreach Librarian also represents the library on various campus committees.
The normal salary range is low-to-mid thirties, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University offers an excellent fringe benefits package including health insurance, life insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick days, and tuition waiver benefits.
Qualifications: Requirements: Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program; one-to-three years related academic library experience; commitment to a high level of service; interest in working with non-traditional students; documented, well-developed teaching skills; knowledge of online resources and library technology; ability to work in a collaborative atmosphere which supports and encourages independent work; ability to have good relationships within the University and the larger community; ability to promote the library as essential to academic life; broad perspective on the work of academic libraries, commitment to balance of traditional collection and electronic resources; excellent communication, organization, analytical, and decision-making skills; ability to work in a climate of change and within a context of limited resources. Preferences: Second advanced degree in a subject area; experience with instruction, reference, and outreach in an academic environment; experience with collection development.

Provides general and virtual information, research and reference services; plans, teaches and assesses impact of information literacy instruction in collaboration with faculty; develops web and print based materials; serves as outreach specialist (liaison) to academic departments.

- Prepares materials and strategies for and delivers library use instruction designed to enhance information literacy skills
- Provides reference services as part of library staff team approach
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with UMA colleges, programs and faculty that support the library's and UMA's mission
- Represents library with faculty and staff, the larger community and University of Maine System committees and librarians
- Responsibilities
- Represents the library in the University of Maine System and other Consortial reference meetings
- Staffs the reference desk and provides in-depth reference services in person and by means of telephone, e-mail and virtual ask-a-librarian services
- Teaches library instruction in the library, in teaching computer labs and in the academic classroom
- Develops and implements library outreach programs to better engage faculty members and students in use and application of information resources
- Prepares research subject/topic guides for research
- Participates in professional organizations
- Works with and under the direction of the Director and Dean of Libraries to achieve success and personal and professional development
- Gathers data and provides reports
- Serves on University committees
- Knowledge and skill qualifications:
- Required:
- ALA accredited MLS
