Jill Rubinson, Professor of English, specializes in British Literature, with particular interests in Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and the English novel. A graduate of Cornell University, she received her A.M. and Ph.D. in English Literature from Harvard University. While in graduate school, she was a Harvard University Scholar, a teaching fellow, and a member of the faculty at Emmanuel College in Boston.
Prior to coming to UMA, Jill founded and served as the first director of a community school for adults in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She also worked as a consultant in adult education in Massachusetts and England.
Co-author of From Page to Screen: Women Writers, Jill is a contributing editor of Shakespeare and the Classroom and has published articles in several other journals, including the Shakespeare Bulletin and the Northeast Honors Journal. Recent scholarly activities include keynote speaker at the Jane Austen Society of Maine, visiting scholar at the Institute of English Studies of the University of London, and visiting scholar at the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham, England, where she was part of a distinguished speaker series.
Other professional and community activities and awards include UMA Teacher of the Year (Student Choice Award), UMA Meritorious Achievement Award, Maine Arts Commission, Maine Humanities Scholar, Board of Trustees of the Kennebec Montessori School, and several reaccreditation visiting committees.
