The Katz Library is beginning a new program of lending laptop computers to UMA students for 3-hour in-library use. Students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid UMA photo ID card in order to sign out these laptops.
Laptops will be available at the library's Circulation Desk. UMA students wishing to borrow them must read and sign the Laptop Use policy form – which is available at the Circulation Desk. If you have any questions, please call the library @ 621-3349.
BENNETT D. KATZ LIBRARY'S LAPTOP LOAN POLICY:
UMA Students over the age of 18 may sign out laptop computers for 3 hours for in-library use.
You must present a current UMA Photo ID/Library Card to sign out a laptop.
You are completely responsible for this $1600 laptop computer while it is in your possession:
- If the laptop is damaged while in your possession, you will be billed for its repair or replacement, at the discretion of Katz Library Media Services. Normally, laptops will be replaced if the cost of repair is greater than 50% of the cost of replacement.
- If the equipment is stolen while in your possession, you will be billed for the replacement of the equipment.
- The Katz Library reserves the right to determine whether damage to the equipment was due to accident, abuse or intentional misuse.
- Any repair or replacement charges owed to Katz Library for laptop damage or loss will be added to your student account and will prevent registration, graduation, and access to grades/transcripts if not paid.
- When transporting the laptop, make sure the cover is closed completely. Objects may damage the computer screen if the cover is not closed completely.
- If you have any problem with the laptop, return it to the library’s circulation desk.
- Do not attempt to make any repairs to the equipment yourself.
- Never remove any components from the laptop.
Never leave this computer unattended for any reason!
If you must leave the library while the laptop is checked out to you, return it to our circulation desk staff for safekeeping.
- Be advised, thefts do occur on all U-Maine campuses.
- It is strongly recommended that YOU watch the computer, and not leave it up to a friend or someone else while you take a break. Remember, it is YOU, not your friends, who will be charged the full amount if the equipment is stolen while signed out in your name.
- Never touch the screen. The laptop screen is very sensitive and can be punctured if not handled properly.
- Keep food and beverages away from the laptop.
Be sure to save your work to some type of removable media (CD-RW, Flash/Jump drive, etc) or use your horde/imp account to e-mail your work to yourself. Any documents left on a laptop will be deleted.
Use of the laptops for word, data and spreadsheet processing is at your own risk. The Katz Library will not be held responsible for lost or damaged work done on this laptop. This laptop was checked and found to be in good working order at the time of checkout. It will be checked again on its return.
