
Licensed Veterinary Technician
University College of Bangor, a campus of the University of Maine at Augusta, is recruiting for a LVT to work in the Veterinary Technology program. This is a full-time, professional position working a ten month work year (one month during the summer and nine months during the academic year). Primary responsibilities include: modeling collaborative professional relationships between LVT's and Veterinarians; providing efficient operations of the laboratories, both required and optional; assisting with the laboratory portion of the Veterinary Technology program; assisting in providing a quality educational experience.
Required Qualifications: a degree in Veterinary Technology and a current Maine license as a Veterinary Technologist; demonstrated expertise in Clinical Veterinary skills; practice management equipment; supply maintenance; excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Role and Responsibilities:
- Advisement of students: Job opportunities.
- Assist the faculty as they teach laboratory portion of the VTE program.
- Model the collaborative professional relationship between LVT and the veterinarians.
- Assist with the efficient operation of the VTE laboratories, both required and optional, at the Bangor campus and all off campus locations.
- Knowledge of current OSHA regulations.
- Assist the program coordinator in providing a quality educational experience for the students.
Duties Include:
- Facilitate the acquisition of learning resource materials in the form of books, videos, computer assisted instruction programs, teaching models, etc.
- Participates in projects and activities directed by the program coordinator.
- Prepare for VTE laboratory sessions, including acquisition and set-up of equipment and supplies needed by the instructor.
- Attend VTE laboratory sessions and assist the students in learning the procedures and skills.
- Facilitate the practice of skills by students in the VTE program.
- Responsible for laboratory-related recordkeeping, including radiology and surgery logs, controlled substance logs, patient medical records, vaccination records, etc.
- Facilitate compliance with environmental health and safety requirements at all laboratory locations including maintenance of up-to-date MSDS sheets, researching regulations, implementing required plans, and compliance with OSHA and USDA stipulations.
- Facilitate animal use in laboratories, including transport to and from source, maintenance of cages/runs, proper identification and compliance with source requirements for animal treatment/use.
Specialized Veterinary Technician Responsibilities:
- Urinalysis: specific gravity, examine and identify sediment, test chemical properties.
- ELISA methodology: heartworm disease, FELV/FIV, FIP, Parvo.
- Identifying blood parasites.
- Parasitologic evaluations: external (mites, fleas, ticks and lice), internal (fecal flotation and direct smear).
- Identifying common adult parasites and applying knowledge of parasite life cycle.
- Hematologic evaluation: collection of sample, CBC, microscopic exam, WBC, staining technique, total protein and hematocrit.
- Blood chemistry tests: pre-anesthetic, general health and individual diagnostic tests.
- Semen evaluation.
- Necropsy procedures.
- Cytologic evaluation: vaginal smears, estrus cycle evaluation.
- Collect, store and ship samples according to lab protocol.
- Explain how to handle rabies suspects safely.
- Basic principles of laboratory safety.
- Maintain IDEXX machine.
- Radiology: implement required safety measures, use technique charts, take diagnostic radiographs, position large and small animal patients, use Orthopedic Foundation of America applications/positioning for canine displasia, process diagnostic radiographs: darkroom technique, quality control, replenish developer and fixer, label, file and store film.
- Proper care of equipment.
- Large and small animal nursing.
- Perform veni puncture for treatment or blood sampling: cephalic, jugular and saphenous.
- Calculate and administer injections: subcrutaneous, intermuscular.
- Place intravenous catheters: cephalic, saphenous and jugular-horse.
- Maintain fluid therapy: catheter placement, determine and maintain correct rate.
- Medicate orally: balling gun, dose syringe, gastric intubation and hand piling.
- Apply/remove bandages and splints.
- Small animal dental prophylaxis.
- Implement personnel safety measures.
- Prepare prescription diets.
- Nail trims.
- Apply equine leg and tail wraps.
- Express canine anal sacs.
- Clean and medicate ears: dog and cat.
- Administer enemas.
- Collect urine samples: cystocentesis, catheterize male and female patients, void.
- Collect and examine skin scrapes.
- Perform first aid and CPR.
- Recognize and use appropriate emergency drugs.
- Surgical preparation: sterilize equipment using autoclave, prepare needed equipment, identify instruments, identify common sutures (types and size), prepare gowns, masks, gloves, drapes, prepare surgical site using aseptic technique, operating room sanitation and care and position patient.
- Assist with routine surgical/obstetrical procedures: ovariohysterectomy, castration, c-section, abdominal, prolapsed organs and orthopedic.
- Perform as surgical assistant: insert and secure IV catheter, calculate and administer preoperative medication (IV anesthetics), endotrachial intubation, induce general anesthesia (inhalant anesthetics).
- Properly operate anesthetic machines.
- Calculate injectable analgesics and sedatives.
- Assist with care of exposed tissue and organs.
- Monitor general anesthesia (stages and planes)-esophageal stethoscope and doppler.
- Recognize abnormal EKG and audible sounds.
- Recognize anesthetic emergencies.
- Resuscitate with anesthetic antagonist.
- Properly scavenge waste anesthetic gas.
- Monitor anesthetic recovery and provide intensive post-operative care.
- Perform post-surgical clean-up.
- Remove sutures.
