UMA Moosebytes
UMA's electronic news bulletin for students is entitled Moosebytes. This weekly e-publication is sent to all registered UMA students. To avoid missing vital information, UMA students should activate their free University e-mail account at http://www.maine.edu/useraccount.html; implement the forwarding option if they prefer to receive their mail at an alternate e-mail address; maintain the accuracy of that forwarding address; and check e-mail frequently.

Policy On Use Of Student Electronic Mail (E-Mail) Addresses For University Internal Mass Communication Purposes
Transmission of mass e-mail notices directed to a comprehensive list of all University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) registered students must be controlled so that students do not receive large quantities of unwelcome and unsolicited mail from the University. The goal of this policy is to maintain the effectiveness of e-mail as a communication tool with our students. The Office of Student Life in Augusta has been designated to coordinate e-mail notices directed to the entire student body or a subgroup of all University College of Bangor students. The Office of the Dean of Students has discretion as to whether the information submitted should be sent electronically to all students. The Dean will consult with other members of the administration, as appropriate, in this review. In addition, the President and members of the President's immediate staff may independently authorize mass e-mail communications to all registered students via the Office of Student Life.
E-mail notifications to all students will only be permitted under the following guidelines:
- To maintain compliance with FERPA guidelines, such e-mail communications must conceal the electronic addresses and identities of all student recipients.
- Normally, no more than one collective e-mail notice will be sent to the student body per week.
- The information must relate to recipients' role as university students and the initiator of the message has a legitimate association with the university as employee, student or member of a university-sanctioned group or organization.
- Normally, e-mail notifications regarding a specific topic will be authorized only once per semester.
- Requests for inclusion in routine mass e-mails must be submitted to the Office of Student Life in Augusta at least five working days prior to the posted distribution date, allowing sufficient time for compiling information and seeking further authorization if required.
NOTE: The Augusta Office of Student Life has agreed to reduce the period of notice required for inclusion in Mossebytes from 5 to 2 days - normally, the deadline for the Thursday afternoon publication will be noon on Tuesday. - Content of the submissions must be brief (no more than five lines in New Times Roman, size 12 font), in final form and in MS Word or text file (.txt) format.
- The Office of Student Life will NOT edit or change any information within a submission. If changes are necessary to any part of the submission, the entire submission must be amended and resubmitted by the sender. This will protect the sender from others inadvertently distributing incorrect information.
- Student Life, with the approval of the Office of the Dean of Students, will process only those requests whose content meet ALL of the following criteria:
- contain no attachments, although embedded Internet links are appropriate;
- abide by UMA, University of Maine System, state and federal regulations (FERPA and GLBA);
- clearly identify the sponsoring organization, a contact for further information and/or an appropriate e-mail response path;
- send a message that is consistent with the mission of the University (teaching, research and public service, and the administrative functions that support this mission); and
- provide a direct service to the majority of the targeted group and provide a benefit for all included in the targeted group.
