Drivers Licenses and the Elderly   by Daniel Onion

Evaluating elderly people for their ability continue to drive is the topic of Dr. Onion's talk: "Miss Daisy Driving; Assessing Senior Drivers' Safe Driving Capabilities and Sustaining Their Independence."  He is Director (emeritus) of the Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency and Chair of the Medical Advisory Board, Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.  Dr. Onion's intent is to assure that competent drivers are able to continue to do so, but he is also concerned with alternatives for those who cannot.  He states, "The potential remedies for impaired transportation to allow aging in place are imperfect but numerous; they take a lot of individual adaptation because the people themselves are usually moving through a progression of disabilities."

Panelists will be Penny Higgins, Ed.D., R.N., former Rehabilitation Nursing Professor ("painful family decisions", Katherine Freund - Founder and Director of the Independent Transportation Network (ITN...paid and volunteer drivers), and Wendy Russell, of Chatholic Charities' SEARCH program (volunteer drivers).  The moderator will be Chuck Acker.

“The Conversation” is intended to clarify what hospice care is, clarify misconceptions, and answer questions about end-of-life decisions. The program will consist of an award-winning film followed by a panel of highly experienced and informed hospice caregivers.

Panelist include hospice educator Pam Brown, hospice chaplain, Rev. Bill Meyer, and volunteer director Donna Jacobs.
