About
A native of Australia, trumpeter/educator/composer Tim Weir has won two DownBeat jazz awards and been nominated for one Grammy Award. He has appeared with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Charlottesville Symphony, Key West Pops Orchestra and the Miami (FL) Chamber Orchestra. He has toured the world playing shows on cruise ships, and has performed with such luminaries as Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Michael Bolton, Celia Cruz, Bobby Shew, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and the Funk Brothers.
He has contributed numerous articles for the Australian Trumpet Guild’s journal, Mouthpiece and was recently published in the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Tim has worked as conductor, adjudicator and clinician at numerous festivals and all-district events in Florida and Virginia and has presented clinics and masterclasses at UNC Charlotte, Virginia Tech, University of Minnesota – Duluth, Augusta State University (GA), James Madison University (VA) and Radford University (VA).
Tim received his D.M.A. in Trumpet Performance (Jazz) from the University of Miami and his M.Mus from Florida International University. His B.Mus is from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. His principal teachers include Laurie Frink, Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, Arturo Sandoval, Greg Gisbert, Jason Carder and Alex Norris. Tim is a member of NafME, APRA, ITG, a former board member of the Australian Trumpet Guild, and was the coordinator of the Festival of Trumpets when the ITG conference was held in Sydney, Australia in 2010.
Dr. Weir is currently coordinator of the Jazz and Contemporary Music program at the University of Maine at Augusta, where he teaches trumpet, ensembles, theory and improvisation.
