Objective 1.3.2 Strategies and Benchmarks

1.3.2 The University will hire new full-time faculty to improve the ratios between full-time faculty, adjunct faculty and students to be more consistent with the average at the other UMS campuses.

A high priority in the decision as to what positions will be searched must take into account a program/department's student/f.t. faculty ratio. Program faculty will need to determine an optimum student/faculty ratio by May 2007. This ratio need not, nor is it expected to, be uniform throughout all programs. A program delivered via ITV and through the University College Centers uses center staff for advising and counseling of students, and therefore all other things being equal should have a higher student/faculty ratio than a program delivered strictly on campus. All programs will present their written statements with optimum ratios and justifications to their deans, who will then review and bring them to Provost's staff. Provost's staff will formulate questions of program faculty if needed, and then reach consensus about appropriate hiring targets for each program during the summer of 2007. This approach will first impact searches in fiscal 2009, until then specific goals stated in Strategies and Benchmarks of 1.3.1, anecdotal information, and raw data will help set hiring priorities.
