Objective 3.2.2 Strategies and Benchmarks

3.2.2 The Advising Center will provide opportunities for faculty and staff to refine advising skills and share advising resources by coordinating with the Advising Steering Committee, reinstating advising workshops, and improving access to advising information.

Strategies to achieve this objective include:

  • The Advising Centers will continue to: conduct 1-on-1 advising orientation sessions with new faculty as implemented in Augusta 2004; offer the "Lunch & Learn" workshops as implemented in Bangor in 2005; publish the Faculty Facts advising newsletter; train faculty and staff in the use of the current degree audit program started in fall 2006; and participate in the planning of the annual UMS Advising Summit.
  • The College Success Grant Program Coordinator will monitor intervention activities with the pilot group (summer and fall 2007 admits) and share successful strategies/intervention tools to use with additional academic programs added in subsequent years.
  • During FY '08 Advising staff will train faculty and other staff in how to access and use the new electronic Admission files (e.g., application forms, high school and college transcripts, etc.) resulting from the PeopleSoft implementation. During FY '09 Advising staff will train faculty and other staff in use of a new degree audit program scheduled for unveiling that year.
  • The Director of Advising will continue to serve on Provost's Staff and work with it to develop strategies and workshops to improve faculty advising and retention efforts.
