Objective 3.2.3 Strategies and Benchmarks
3.2.3 Advising staff, in collaboration with faculty, will provide a continuum of advising services to facilitate student clarification of educational and career goals, selection of appropriate programs of study, and translation of newly acquired skills and knowledge into meaningful career opportunities.
Strategies to achieve this objective include:
- During FY '08 the Director of Advising, upon the recommendation of the Provost's Staff, will hire and train part-time faculty to serve as academic advisors during peak registration periods, increasing the likelihood that more advisees will interact with knowledgeable UMA representatives at critical times in their academic planning and increasing part-time faculty knowledge of and engagement with the institution. In FY '09 one FTE staff position will be added at the Bangor campus to increase access to advising services and serve as the career services specialist for Bangor students.
- Due to the growing number of UMA baccalaureate degree students, the Advising staff, during FY '08, will increase programming for and outreach to students planning for graduate and further professional study beyond their undergraduate degree. Starting in the fall of 2008 Advising staff will increase on-site visits to feeder community colleges to assist their students in early planning for the transition to UMA. During FY '09 the career advising staff will strengthen their partnerships with capstone course instructors to more fully support graduating seniors in their transition from undergraduate to professional employee or graduate study.
- By the conclusion of FY '08, the career advising staff will articulate a plan to embed career development goals and strategies within both the Academic Advising and the Community Engagement Programs, ensuring that both programs are mutually reinforcing and effectively bolster the professional competencies required of UMA students. In addition, the career advising and Women, Work & Community staffs will implement strategies to effectively coordinate their services and provide optimum career development support to UMA students.
