Objective 3.3.3 Strategies and Benchmarks
3.3.3 The Division of Student Development will collaborate with faculty to improve proficiencies in areas of shared responsibility, e.g. ADA accommodations, classroom management, early intervention strategies.
Division staff will continue existing collaborative activities with faculty, e.g., informational visits by staff to developmental classes; workshops for faculty on ADA responsibilities and procedures; participation in campus and UMS-sponsored faculty development workshops; individual faculty orientations about advising responsibilities and resources; staff monitoring of the academic progress of student athletes; staff consultation on academic policy development and academic integrity violations; etc.
As noted the strategy for 3.2.3, career advising staff will seek greater involvement with program capstone courses and projects. Staff in Community Engagement will assist faculty in implementing more Service Learning activities. Once a UMA Student Academic Integrity policy is approved, the Dean of Students will collaborate with faculty to promote awareness of the policy and educate students and faculty regarding the policy and the related challenges of plagiarism.
During spring of '07 an in-person workshop on dealing with difficult students will be delivered on each campus by the Dean of Students.
During FY '08 the Division will review its existing resource materials for faculty to ensure comprehensiveness, ease of access and clarity. If necessary, new or revised materials will be generated and/or links created from the faculty/staff UMA web pages. During fall of '08 the Dean of Students, as per strategy for 5.1.4, will coordinate a survey of faculty to identify their professional development needs and priorities in areas of shared responsibility. In spring of '08 Student Development staff will collaborate with faculty to initiate a series of brown bag discussions on identified priorities of mutual interest.
