Objective 3.3.4 Strategies and Benchmarks
3.3.4 Faculty and staff will expand formal and informal opportunities for interaction with students outside of the traditional classroom, e.g., major-specific events, student clubs and organizations, campus working groups, co-curricular activities, mentoring opportunities.
During FY '07 formal job descriptions and orientation materials and procedures were created for all faculty (and staff) Advisors to university-recognized student clubs and organizations. For the first time, faculty (and staff) Advisors were formally appointed to their positions by the Dean of Students with copies to the appropriate college deans and personnel files. During FY '08, Student Life staff will assess the additional professional development needs/desires of club Advisors and implement appropriate learning opportunities.
During FY '08 Student Life Staff will work with faculty to establish more academic program-related clubs and organizations and encourage student organizations to invest their financial resources in more curricular-related student activities, e.g., films and lecture series. All campus units and organizations will be encouraged to co-sponsor events with student organizations, as appropriate. The institutionalization of the Community Engagement Office in FY '09 will create more opportunities for joint student/employee volunteer experiences. The Dean of Students and Student Government Advisors will continue to work with the Student Government to meet all requests for student representation on campus committees and working groups. By FY '09 the Student Life Department will expand the number of employees willing and trained to serve as ad hoc Advisors for university-sponsored student activities, increasing opportunities for student/employee interactions.
