Objective 5.2.2 Strategies and Benchmarks

5.2.2    Governance units will develop biennial performance assessments of appropriate administrators.

In FY '07 the Provost will work with the Faculty Senate to construct assessment methods of the Academic Deans and the Provost.  The Provost will be assessed in the spring of 2007.  Since all the current deans will be stepping down shortly, assessments of the new deans will occur in the first and third years of their appointments, and continue in alternate years of their terms thereafter.  In FY '08 the Provost will work with the Faculty Senate to determine the appropriateness and methods to assess other deans and administrators.  Assuming that other administrators are deemed appropriate to be assessed, they will be asked to participate in the development process.

In FY '08, the Dean of Students will work with the Student Government Association to build a system of assessment by them of governance.  This assessment would focus on their relationships to the SGA Advisor(s), Dean of Students, Provost and President.  Currently, Student Development does extensive assessment by students of its activities and services.

In preparation for writing this strategy and benchmark statement, the Provost consulted with the V.P. for Administration to discuss the feasibility of staff employees (members of the CEA and PEA units) being able to assess their supervisors.  As a result of that discussion it was deemed impossible to insure an employee's confidentiality due to the often small numbers or workers in a department.  An alternative strategy was agreed upon to insure a climate of employment that promoted open and honest dialogue between staff and supervisors.  In FY '08 the Director of Human Resources will develop and implement a professional development plan that will teach supervisors "best practices" to achieve the desired open work environment.
