UMA Strategic Plan - History and Context for Objectives 5.2 and 5.3

Objective 5.2: Strengthen the institution by encouraging employees to participate in shared governance, which is understood to mean that "faculty, students, staff and administrators recognize their shared accountability for their roles and responsibilities and for the performance of the University in carrying out its mission."

and

Objective 5.3: Include staff recognition as a consistent practice of the University.

Items 5.2.1 - 5.2.3 are intended to promote identity and responsibility in the governance of the university. These items when linked with Key Goal 2 on assessment and planning outline the need for input into the decision making processes at UMA by all constituent groups. We will raise the awareness of how every member of the community can and should use his or her voice to help set and achieve long and short term objectives. As a simple and direct step in this direction, we will re-establish performance assessments for administrators that are developed by those being supervised. Incumbent upon the administration is the need to seek, listen, utilize as feasible and respond to the various constituencies' formal assessments and annual reports.

Objective 5.3 notes our need to do a better job at recognizing the accomplishments of the faculty and staff. If the administration is seeking greater involvement in university affairs by faculty and staff, it is only reasonable that acknowledgement and celebration of those efforts along with other professional accomplishments.

In more direct language, UMA through Objectives 5.2 and 5.3 intends to promote a sense of ownership by the entire university community. Ownership denotes both responsibilities to and benefits from being a member of this community.
