Objective 5.3.2 Strategies and Benchmarks

5.3.2 The Office of Public Information will highlight the accomplishments of UMA employees in University publications, local newspapers and other media.

In order to better promote and publicize the accomplishments of UMA faculty, staff, and students, the Office of Public Information has launched the following initiatives:

Moose Print

A quarterly newsletter for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as for UMA friends, and prospective students, Moose Print includes regular feature stories on faculty, staff, student, and alumni achievements.

E-Moose

An electronic newsletter for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, friends, and prospective students for whom we have email addresses,  E-Moose also includes feature stories on faculty, staff, student, and alumni achievements. A quarterly publication, E-Moose comes out between issues of Moose Print, and is linked to the web site.

Web Site

Overhauled website provides links on home page that highlight accomplishments of faculty, staff, and students. Accomplishments are updated regularly.

Earned media

A more aggressive and proactive approach to earned media began a year ago. In order of importance, earned media efforts are prioritized as follows:

  • Student achievements/hometown media
  • Faculty achievements
  • Faculty expertise and comment on outside stories
  • Campus Events/Activities – led by/presented by UMA students and/or faculty
  • New Facilities
  • Campus Events/Activities – outside speakers, entertainment, etc

The Office of Public Information has also begun to compile a Faculty/Media Resource Guide cataloging the areas of expertise of individual faculty members. To be completed in early 2007, the Guide will be used in two key ways:

  • The Office of Public Information will use the Guide as a tool for proactively contacting the media when we have a faculty member who can provide expert comment on an evolving local, state, or national story.
  • Media outlets will be furnished a copy of the Guide for their own use, enabling them to contact appropriate faculty members when they need expert comment on a local, state, or national issue.

The Faculty/Media Resource Guide will be updated each fall, with special attention made to incorporating the areas of expertise of new faculty members.
