UMA Student Health Insurance Plan

Who Qualifies?

Any student who is registered for at least 6.0 UMA credit hours may purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan.


Is Health Insurance Coverage Mandatory for Students?

Degree students in aviation, dental assisting, dental hygiene, medical laboratory technology, nursing, and veterinary technology, as well as students participating in athletics and club sports, and international students are required to have medical insurance. For all other students, insurance coverage is optional, but encouraged.  Those students participating in athletics and/or club sports should contact Kimberly Lloyd, Assistant Athletic Director, at 621-3125  for further information about the insurance requirement for student athletes.


How Do I Learn More About the Coverage?

Students should review the Student Insurance Plan.  This information, as well as an online enrollment card and various forms, is available online.   An "insurance packet," containing the brochure, letter, and enrollment card, will be available from the Office of the Dean of Students after June.  Requests can be directed to UMA’s Office of the Dean of Students by emailing Michele or by calling (207) 621-3176 or 1-877-UMA-1234, ext. 3176. Packets will also be available at the Bangor Campus (Advising Office or Admissions) and at University College locations after June. 


How Much Does It Cost?

The insurance policy for 2013-2014 is underwritten by Nationwide Life Insurance Company and serviced by Cross Insurance.  Questions should be directed to Cross Insurance of Lewiston, Maine, at 1-800-537-6444.  The cost for a full year of coverage (8/15/13 - 8/14/14), for an individual student, is $1,877. Students who sign up for just the spring semester (1/01/14 - 8/14/14) pay a prorated cost of $1,166. Coverage becomes effective on the dates above or on the dates of enrollment in the plan, whichever is later. The enrollment period for annual coverage ends on 9/20/13. The enrollment period for the spring semester ends on 2/07/14. 

Payment can be made in full by bank card or check.  If joining the four-payment plan for the fall semester, the first payment is due by 8/15/13, with payment due dates on 9/15/13, 10/15/13, and 11/15/13.  There is a $30 non-refundable fee to join.  If students have excess financial aid and wish to use these funds towards the cost of the insurance, the enrollment card must be returned by 8/15/13. 

If joining the four-payment plan for the spring semester, the first payment is due by 1/05/14, with payment due dates on 2/05/14, 3/05/14, and 4/05/14.  There is a $30 non-refundable fee to join.  If students have excess financial aid and wish to use these funds towards the cost of the insurance, the enrollment card must be returned by 12/28/13.


How Do I Sign Up?

To enroll in the basic Student Insurance Plan, students can access the insurance enrollment card at Cross Insurance Agency.  Students can also request an insurance packet from the Office of the Dean of Students. This packet contains a Student Health Insurance Enrollment Card, which must be completed and returned with payment to the Office of the Dean of Students, UMA, 46 University Drive, Augusta, Maine, 04330.


Can I Get Coverage for My Family?

Dependent coverage may be purchased through the Cross Insurance Agency at (207) 783-8591 or 1-800-537-6444. Payment for dependent coverage must be made directly to the insurance agency.
