UMA Student Athletes Recognized for Achievements on the Court and in the Classroom

With the close of the 2017-2018 basketball season, several student-athletes with the University of Maine at Augusta women’s basketball team were recognized by its regional Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC), as well as nationally by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).  Additionally, UMA Women’s Basketball Coach, Jennifer Laney was honored as Coach of the Year by YSCC.  With a 21-4 overall (13-3 conference) regular season record, the Moose competed in the YSCC tournament and earned a place in the USCAA National Championships making it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Villa Maria College.  This outstanding season was capped with the UMA student-athletes being recognized as follows:

YSCC Conference Awards

Carmen Bragg – All-Conference Second Team
10.9 points per game, 5th in assists, 8th in 3-pointers

Dominique Lewis – All-Conference First Team
7th in points, 7th in assists, 1st in 3-pointers

Caitlin LaFountain – All-Conference First Team
1st in total rebounds, 5th in points, 2nd in blocks

Dustin Simpson-Bragg – All-Conference First Team
3rd in points, 7th defensive rebounds, 6th Blocks

Jennifer Laney – Coach of the Year

Under Laney’s leadership, the UMA women’s basketball team earned its third bid to the USCAA National Tournament this season.  The Moose were the Yankee Small College Conference Championship Runner Up in Elite Eight post-season play. This marks the 3rd time Jennifer Laney has received the Coach of the Year award including the 2011 and 2015 seasons.

Additionally, the USCAA announced the National Academic All-Americans teams at the National Championship banquet for the 2017-2018 basketball season. These awards recognize student athletes that maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher while competing in the USCAA.  Also during the banquet, the USCAA announced its National 1st and 2nd All-American teams as well as its honorable mentions. The following UMA student-athletes from the women’s and men’s basketball teams were recognized:

USCAA National Awards 

Carmen Bragg – National Academic All-American Team

Dominique Lewis – National All American Honorable Mention

Caitlin LaFountain – First Team National All-American and National Academic All-American Team
