The University of Maine at Augusta has a long a rich history of being a commuter institution. On-campus housing is not currently available at the Bangor campus or any of our statewide UMA Centers. Limited student housing is available for Augusta campus students at Stevens Commons in Hallowell.
Students typically commute from home or rent rooms or apartments near their campus or center. The information below is provided in an effort to support students with their housing search.

Statewide
The Maine State Housing Authority (MSHA), MaineHousing.org is an independent state agency that bridges public and private housing finance, combining them to benefit Maine’s low and moderate-income people. The mission of the Maine State Housing Authority is to assist Maine people to obtain and maintain decent, safe, affordable housing and services suitable to their unique housing needs.
Maine’s free rental listing service, MaineHousingSearch.org links people who need housing with the housing they need. It’s fast and easy to use and includes detailed listings with pictures, maps, and more. Listings are updated daily.
You may also choose to use a search engine to help you narrow your search. Use keywords such as “apartment search Maine”, or “housing search Maine”. You could also search by city or county such as “apartments Augusta Maine”. If you’re new to an area, search on keywords such as “relocation services,” with the name of the town and state.
Augusta Area
The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce can provide you with regional information about area cities and towns. You may also enter “housing” into the Member Search box for a list of current members.
The Kennebec Journal (local newspaper published daily), has the Classified Ads for Real Estate, which provides you a search engine to find apartments and homes for rent or sale.
Bangor Area
The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce can provide you with regional information about area cities and towns. You may also search the Member List, Business Directory Search for “Housing”, which provides you with a list of current members.
The Bangor Daily News (local newspaper published daily), has a Real Estate section, which provides you a search engine to find apartments and homes for rent or sale.
Tenants’ Rights and Responsibilities
Maine.gov, Housing & Utilities: this page provides information for tenants regarding assistance and resources.
Pine Tree Legal Assistance: Pine Tree Legal Assistance (PTLA) provides free legal help to Mainers with low incomes. In regards to housing, information is given on topics such as emergency rental assistance, renting/tenants’ rights, subsidized housing/rental assistance.
Public Transportation
Augusta area
UMA collaborates with Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KVCAP) to help bring public transportation to the Augusta/Waterville area communities. Students can ride the bus free with the presentation of a UMA identification card. For more information, check the Kennebec Explorer route schedule & maps.
Bangor area
The Community Connector is a fixed route public transit system operated by the City of Bangor for the communities of the Greater Bangor Urbanized Area. These include Bangor, Brewer, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, and Hampden. Students can ride the bus free to all bus line locations by showing their UMA ID card to the driver.
