Understanding the Five Types of Education Modalities

In Person

What does this type of class look like?

Classes will be taught in-person, on-campus on the days and hours listed in the Class Schedule.

Will I meet in a classroom at a campus, center, or site?  Yes

Am I expected to meet at the scheduled time for the class meetings?  Yes

Will I have the opportunity to interact “live”  with other students?  Yes

Will I have to meet live online using Zoom (or similar tools)?  Possibly

  • An option but would not be required.

Will there be a Brightspace course site that is used with this course?  Possibly

  • Some in person courses use Brightspace, and some do not. Check the syllabus.

Does the course also have an option to watch a recording of the live class session as an online course? No

  • However, class sessions may be recorded for study or to support occasional absences.

Hybrid/Blended

What does this type of class look like?

Classes will be a mixture of in-person classroom instruction and online components. Students should be available on the days and hours listed in the schedule of class meetings.

HyFlex

What does this type of class look like?

A single course is designed so you can choose the instruction mode that fits your needs. Courses designated HyFlex shall be offered both in-person and online synchronously. There shall be no requirement to record classes or to provide copies of such recordings to anyone.

(1) In Person scheduled class meetings at a UMA location.

(2) Distance Synchronous (live in real-time) through Zoom meetings that are scheduled at the same time and connect with in-person class meetings from a receive location (e.g., center), or student’s home and

(3) Online (asynchronous) interactive lessons, assessments, and recordings of in-person class meetings. (Each instructor determines this option, and not all Hyflex classes will offer it.)

Students can choose to experience the course flexibly through any one of the two (possibly three) modes interchangeably during the semester. You still need to keep pace with the Course Schedule.

Will I meet in a classroom at a campus, center, or site?  You Choose

  • You can choose to meet in class at a campus, center, or possibly a site, or choose to connect using Zoom or similar tools from another internet-connected location. Refer to the syllabus for details.

This modality will likely display “Receive” locations in the course search. A receive location is a classroom at one of UMA’s campuses, centers or sites where you can connect with others to the live class using classroom technology. The instructor would be at a different location than the receive location.

Am I expected to meet at the scheduled time for the class meetings?  Yes

Will I have the opportunity to interact “live”  with other students?  Yes

Will I have to meet live online using Zoom?  You Choose

  • Refer to the course description or syllabus for details.

Will there be a Brightspace course site that is used with this course?  Yes

Does the course also have the option to watch a recording of the live class session as an online course? Maybe! Some Hyflex courses will offer this option, but not all.

Will I have support if I need help in my class?

Yes! You will not be learning on your own. No matter what types of classes you choose, UMA is committed to supporting students. Professors and TAs are doing their best to make sure that you will have the help you need, whether you are in person, online, or somewhere in between.

Are there classes that allow me to go at my own pace?

Not really. Even online classes still have due dates and deadlines throughout the semester! All class types will follow a university semester schedule, including a finals schedule. See the UMA Academic Calendar.
