Bio

Emeritus Aspirations:

Awarded Emeritus Faculty status in 2022, a year after retiring I ending my licensed clinical practice. Currently I’m (studying retirement and) contributing to the (small) town in which I reside. My skills have allowed me to contribute as a member of (3) volunteer committees (Broadband, Aging in Place and Neighbors Driving Neighbors). I’ve returned to the study of Japanese language and Buddhist psychology. More specifically, I’ve continued studying constructs of successful aging, the “no self” and masculinities in older men. I look forward to contributing further as a citizen scholar during my emeritus years. The challenge is carefully selecting the topics and venues in which to contribute.

Tenure at UMA

After serving as a full time Clinical Lecture at the University of Toronto, in 1987 I migrated to Maine, continued to practice clinically at AMHI and began teaching at UMA. I joined the Social Science Program as a full-time faculty member in 1991 as one of the first generation of ‘distance education’ specialists.

I taught courses in introductory social sciences, gender studies, personality development, abnormal and cross cultural psychology, positive psychology and selected topics including the psychology of evil and humor. I invested in academic advising both locally and online internationally. I chaired UMA’s Institutional Research Committee, served as President of the Faculty Senate, and UMA’s AFUM Chapter for some years. I was awarded an exchange Erasmus Fellowship to teach in the Czech Republic from Technical University of Liberec

Externally, I served on multiple NECHE (national) university accreditation committees and several community agency governing boards including the Family Violence Project, MoCO, Maine Psychological Association and the International Council of Psychologists. I was appointed to the state’s Board of Examiners of Psychologists testified as an expert in distance education before the U.S. Senate’s Commerce Committee. For a list of awards, publications and conference Papers, see my CV.
