An Important Message from President Cushman Regarding Lewiston Tragedy

Dear UMA Community,

Our hearts are heavy and our senses are shocked with the news of the shooting in Lewiston Wednesday night. As a precaution, UMA, like other schools and businesses, is closing its campuses and Centers today, Thursday, October 26, 2023. All classes and university events have been canceled and will be rescheduled.

UMA is a strong community. That community extends statewide, even worldwide, and so we collectively feel pain when we are filled with sorrow, grief, and fear. We also know that several in our community have been impacted directly by this recent event, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

Please remember that UMA offers numerous means of support for students and employees in trying times like this.

If you are concerned about a faculty or staff colleague, or need assistance yourself, you can access the Human Resources Employee Assistance Program: Cigna EAP (877-622-4327).

UMA’s Counseling & Wellness Center is committed to providing immediate mental health services to students in our community who have been impacted in any way. If you would like to schedule an in-person or telehealth appointment, please email uma.counseling@maine.edu.

I encourage us all to reach out to our families, loved ones, fellow students and our coworkers and provide whatever support we can for each other. I will continue to send further updates as they become available.

Thank you,

Jen Cushman
President
