Student Opportunity: 2024-2025 UMA Maine Policy Scholar, Applications Due March 22

SCHOLARSHIP & RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY:

COULD YOU BE THE 2024-2025 UMA MAINE POLICY SCHOLAR?

A scholarship and valuable year-long learning experience is available for one student from the University of Maine at Augusta to identify a problem facing the state of Maine, conduct research during the year and make policy recommendations to solve that problem in the form of a legislative memo and a research presentation.

The successful applicant chosen to be the UMA Maine Policy Scholar for 2024-2025 will work with 6 other students, one from each of the other University of Maine System institutions, learning how to carry out independent policy research, participate in colloquia, and present their research ideas and findings. Each student works with a faculty advisor and connects with a community mentor and policy experts in their subject from across the state. Past UMA Maine Policy Scholars have gone on to work in state government, to lead advocacy organizations, and to introduce legislation to the Maine State Legislature.

The scholarship is open to students who have completed at least 60 college credits as of August 2024. All majors are eligible. The program runs September 2024 to April 2025. Funding is provided through the Maine Community Foundation. A short 1-page application form and 2-page proposal are due by March 22, 2024.
