UMA Alum Rhonda DeContie appointed as Magistrate

Rhonda DeContie graduates from National Judicial College as only Native American female Magistrate east of the Mississippi

Rhonda DeContie has been appointed as Magistrate to the Penobscot Nation Tribal Court. A 2007 graduate of the Justice Studies Program at UMA and a Bangor TRIO alum, Magistrate DeContie is the only female Native American court magistrate to serve east of the Mississippi River.

Magistrate DeContie will hear ex parte cases as part of her judicial duties. She plans to start a peacemaking court on Indian Island to complement and expand the traditional justice system of the Penobscot Nation Tribal Healing and Wellness Court. Magistrate DeContie remains actively connected to UMA as a member of the Bangor campus Advisory Board.
