Negotiating the balance between helping students understand and implement AI with all of its ethical pitfalls can feel intimidating and precarious. These guiding questions are meant to assist you in deciding how to incorporate AI tools into your classroom more ethically and responsibly and to align use with the guidelines outlined in the University of Maine System (UMS) Guidelines for General Artificial Intelligence Use.
Using AI can be immensely helpful for getting a deeper understanding of a topic, brainstorming ideas, or even getting new perspectives. At the same time, it’s important to ensure you are using AI ethically. We hope this checklist can provide some guidance in helping you decide if your use is ethical and aligns with the University of Maine System (UMS) Guidelines for General Artificial Intelligence Use.
University of Maine Artificial Intelligence (UM AI) is led by a steering committee that spans various disciplines across campus with multiple faculty and administrator
members. AI, broadly defined, can potentially be useful in accelerating various aspects of research, while it also poses some challenges as described in this document.
Academic integrity violations strike at the heart of the educational mission of the University of Maine System. The academic community of the University of Maine System recognizes that adherence to high principles of academic integrity is vital to the academic function of the University. Academic integrity is based upon honesty. All students of the University are expected to be honest in their academic endeavors. All academic work should be performed in a manner that will provide an honest reflection of the knowledge and abilities of each student. All members of the academic community should regard any breach of academic honesty as a serious offense.
