Liberty’s Prison: The Inmate’s Son Who Radically Reformed an American Prison Book Launch

Book cover for Liberty’s Prison by Randall Liberty and Christine Graf. The cover shows a man in a suit seated inside a green-painted prison cell block with metal stairs and railings behind him. Large white title text reads “Liberty’s Prison,” with the subtitle “The Inmate’s Son Who Radically Reformed an American Prison.”

President Cushman invites students, staff, and faculty to a special event celebrating the release of Liberty’s Prison: The Inmate’s Son Who Radically Reformed an American Prison by Randy Liberty, chair of the UMA Board of Visitors, UMA faculty member, and a longtime leader in prison education reform.

The program will feature a moderated conversation and panel discussion exploring Liberty’s personal journey and the life-changing impact of education within correctional settings, followed by a book signing. The event will also highlight UMA’s Prison Education Partnership and its work to expand access to higher education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students across Maine.

Reflecting UMA’s mission of Transforming Lives, this event shows what is possible when education is accessible, meaningful, and rooted in opportunity.
